$50 to get a coronavirus shot. That’s the offer from the city of Harlingen. City commissioners have approved a program to pay a $50 incentive to persuade those who haven’t had time or are hesitant to get the coronavirus vaccine.
The incentive is for anyone eligible to get the vaccine, meaning anyone 12 and older. The Harlingen program is similar to the Cameron County program that began last month but is only for school students between 12 and 18. Harlingen officials say it’s critical that as many people as possible get vaccinated because hospitals and their ICU’s are at capacity.
The incentive program is being funded through the American Rescue Plan. It will run through the end of October.
