One of the only two Republicans in the Texas House to oppose private school vouchers this year says he doesn’t plan to run for a seventh term.
Representative Gary VanDeaver of New Boston made the announcement on Monday. VanDeaver said he plans to serve out the rest of his term, which ends in January 2027. VanDeaver survived a primary challenge last year from a pro-voucher candidate backed by Governor Greg Abbott.
Former House Speaker Dade Phelan of Beaumont, the only other Republican to vote against the billion-dollar voucher program this year, is also not seeking reelection.
