A bill calling for a referendum for Texas voters to decide on independence from the United States is now before the state legislature. State Rep. Kyle Biedermann, a Republican from Fredericksburg, filed the proposed legislation last week.
Biedermann says HB-1359 doesn’t call for “immediate independence,” but would allow Texans to vote on whether state lawmakers should create a committee to develop a plan for state independence. The bill isn’t considered likely to pass, and is already getting pushback from other Republicans.
