Harlingen school trustees have accepted the resignation of Superintendent Dr. J.A. Gonzalez. The school board went behind closed doors during a special meeting Tuesday night, emerging with a statement saying an agreement has been reached to allow Gonzalez to resign and permit the district to pursue hiring a new superintendent.

The board appointed Deputy Superintendent Veronica Kortan as interim superintendent. Gonzalez resigned after just a year at the helm of the Harlingen CISD, and just months after the board approved a 1-year extension to his 3-year contract and gave him a $10,000 raise.

Over the weekend, though, trustees cited “serious issues” for the need to call a special meeting. What those issues are hasn’t been explained.
