Hidalgo County’s tax assessor is issuing a warning about vehicle title and registration renewal scams. Tax Assessor Pablo Villarreal says scammers on Facebook Marketplace are directing people to process their titles by text through a provided phone number. Victims are directed to pay their fees at a local retail store, then pick up their paperwork at the county tax office.
Villarreal says offers that bypass the normal channels for titles and registrations are too good to be true, and he urges anyone victimized by such a scam to report it to authorities.
