A Houston resident is directing the Artemis Two mission as it carries four astronauts around the moon this week.

Emily Nelson, NASA’s chief flight director, leads the team of NASA employees who direct manned space missions from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. She hired on at NASA in 1998 as a flight controller and became a flight director in 2007, involved in those days with space shuttle flights. She’s served as chief flight director since 2023. Artemis Two is the first manned lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972.
