People who cross the border illegally in South Texas can now be charged with trespassing. The Border Patrol arrested a man crossing the Rio Grande River near Mission earlier this month.

The agents charged him with trespassing on military property, noting that the U.S. side of the river is now part of a national defense zone overseen by Joint Base San Antonio.

The February 8th arrest in Hidalgo County was reportedly the first one made under the new policy. The suspect has pleaded guilty to illegal entry into the U.S. and two counts of trespassing and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
