Two men are facing charges after leading authorities on a chase that ended in a tractor-trailer fire in Hidalgo County. The two suspects were stopped at the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint on Thursday night and referred for a secondary inspection.
The suspects fled from the checkpoint, driving north on U.S. 281 before turning around and heading south into Hidalgo County. Law enforcement used a tire deflation device on the tractor-trailer, though the suspects didn’t stop until the vehicle caught fire.
Authorities heard screams coming from the locked trailer, and eventually rescued 39 illegal immigrants from inside. Both men are facing charges of conspiracy to transport aliens in a manner that jeopardizes life.
