A newly detected and highly damaging agricultural pest is now reported in 20 Texas counties, some of them close to the Houston area.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is urging producers statewide to keep an eye out for the pasture mealybug. The invasive species has already caused serious damage to pasture acreage in Texas. The insect destroys forage grasses, making it a threat to livestock operations.
The affected area includes Wharton, Brazoria, and Galveston Counties. At present there is no known insecticide for the pest.
