A Hidalgo County judge is considering a request for a new trial from a man convicted of murder earlier this year.
Carlos Julian Contreras was sentenced to 60 years in prison in September. Investigators said Contreras shot and killed Genaro “Izzy” Castillo in 2020. His attorneys claim that prosecutors offered an immunity deal to Contreras’ common-law wife that led to a change in her testimony.
They believe the judge should order a new trial because the deal may have biased the jury. The judge did not issue a ruling following yesterday’s hearing.
