Legislation Proposed To Limit Natural Gas Flaring


Democratic lawmakers are promoting legislation to impose a new tax on energy companies for flaring natural gas. This byproduct of oil production is presently exempt from state taxes on natural gas production.

Environmental groups want to make it more expensive for companies to flare or vent gas than to capture and sell it. Several oil and gas companies and trade associations have already formed a coalition to work with state regulators to limit flaring.
