Local Initiative To Vaccinate Thousands Of Reynosa Maquila Workers

Hidalgo County and the city of McAllen have launched an initiative to get employees of the maquiladora industry in Reynosa vaccinated against the coronavirus.

County Judge Richard Cortez and McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos Wednesday announced the Essential Economic Trade Initiative, saying the program is aimed at getting one of the region’s biggest economic engines back to normal.

Through the rest of this week, hundreds of maquila workers will be bussed across the Hidalgo International Bridge to an area where county health employees will give them the 1-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Shots will be administered to up to 3,000 factory workers.
