Mayor Whitmire: No Joint Operations Between HPD, ICE

Houston Mayor John Whitmire is clarifying recent comments he made about whether the city is cooperating with ICE operations. The mayor stated over the weekend that it’s “not true” to say the city is “not cooperating with ICE.”

On Wednesday, he told City Council that Houston police don’t participate in ICE immigration operations in the city. HPD union president Doug Griffith said the same, but added that state law requires officers to contact ICE, the FBI, or any other agency with a criminal warrant for a suspect the HPD arrests.
