The City of McAllen wants the U.S. Department of Transportation to reconsider its recent decision to end a direct flight to Mexico City.

A letter sent to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Friday called the Aeromexico route a lifeline for families, businesses and institutions on both sides of the border. City Manager Isaac Tawill urged Duffy to remove the route from a list of canceled flights to honor the unique circumstances of the McAllen market.

The agency announced last week that it was canceling more than a dozen routes between the U.S. and Mexico, accusing the country of illegally freezing U.S. carrier flights for several years.
