Funeral and burial services will be held this week for former Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville, Reymundo Pena.
Pena passed away Friday at age 87. Pena had been hospitalized for several days and was under palliative care at San Juan Nursing Home on the grounds of the Basilica when he died. Pena, a Robstown native, was the fifth bishop of the Brownsville diocese, assigned to the post by Pope John Paul the 2nd in 1995. He served for 14 years until his retirement in 2009. Current Bishop Daniel Flores say Bishop Pena always lived his motto – do everything with love.
A rosary vigil will be held Tuesday night starting at 7 at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Brownsville, and there will be a viewing Wednesday at the Shrine in San Juan. A funeral mass will be held Thursday morning at 10 also at the Basilica.
