A Mercedes middle school coach has been criminally charged with having an improper relationship with a student.
53-year-old David Bryan Reyes was arraigned on the charge Wednesday and jailed on a $250,000 bond. Reyes was arrested Tuesday by Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies in connection with an apparent incident alleged to have occurred at a rural residence in Mercedes last month.
Also Tuesday, Mercedes ISD Superintendent Carolyn Mendiola issued a brief statement saying Reyes is no longer employed with the district. Reyes was employed as a sports staff member at Sgt. William G. Harrell Middle School.
