A meteor streaking across southern New England caused the sonic boom heard by millions Saturday afternoon.

NASA confirmed a fireball passed over Massachusetts Saturday at about 75-thousand miles per hour, and released energy equivalent to roughly 300 tons of TNT when it broke apart.

The agency says the object fragmented about 40 miles above northeast Massachusetts and southeast New Hampshire. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
