Hidalgo County leaders are mourning the death of Mission businessman Eddy Betancourt. The 61-year-old was found dead on Saturday afternoon in McAllen.

Investigators say Betancourt died from a gunshot wound, and his death is being investigated by local, state and federal agencies.

Betancourt was the vice chairman of the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board of Directors and was a member of the Texas Facilities Commission.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez expressed condolences to Betancourt’s family, saying in a statement that he was a tireless advocate for the community and will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.
