Shutterstock image--Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screw-worm fly, or screw-worm for short, is a species of parasitic fly that is well known for the way in which its larvae (maggots) eat the living tissue.

Three more cases of New World screwworm are now confirmed in Texas and New Mexico, for a total number of five cases.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference on Monday at an insect research lab in Kerrville.

The new cases involve a calf in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County, and a dog in New Mexico, which makes it the neighboring state’s first screwworm case.
