New Justice Faces First Major Case In One Week, Involving Texas

New Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett will have an immediate impact as oral arguments in a Texas case involving religious liberty are set for next week. It will decide whether a faith-based adoption agency is allowed to turn away same-sex couples. The Texas Attorney General has filed a brief with the court on this case.

Current Texas law allows faith-based groups working with the child welfare system to deny services when it conflicts with the provider’s sincerely held religious beliefs.
