New Map Prompts Congressman Gonzalez To Run In Different District

Valley Congressman Vicente Gonzalez has announced he is running for re-election – but not in District 15. Gonzalez confirmed Tuesday he will run in neighboring Congressional District 34, which is now where his house is, under the new congressional redistricting map.

The mostly-Republican Texas Legislature redrew Districts 15 and 34, and a portion of Brownsville-based District 34 now juts to the west to include Gonzalez’s residence.

Gonzalez confirmed his re-election bid a day after Governor Greg Abbott made the new map official. Gonzalez’s move has the support of retiring District 34 Representative Filemon Vela.

Gonzalez’s bid for a third term will be challenged by former ACLU attorney Rochelle Garza, who announced her candidacy for District 34 in July.
