A New Zealand weightlifter is the first transgender athlete to compete in The Olympics. The New Zealand Olympic Committee says Laurel Hubbard will compete in the women’s super-heavyweight 87-kg category.

The 43-year-old Hubbard competed as a man before coming out as transgender in 2013. She became eligible to compete at the Olympics when the International Olympic Committee changed its rule in 2015 to allow transgender athletes to compete as women if their testosterone levels are below a certain threshold.
