The mayor of Pharr says the city will build and open a new convention center by 2028. Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez gave his State of the City address at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg Thursday.

The mayor highlighted the financial health of the city, noting that its 290-million-dollar balanced budget includes a surplus of over 11-million dollars. He also spoke about other accomplishments, such as a lower crime rate and the opening of the first IKEA in the Rio Grande Valley. He finished his speech by showing a video announcing the new convention center. No details about the cost or timeline for the project were announced.
