A project to remove what remains of the original Queen Isabella Causeway could get underway this month. The Texas General Land Office met with contractors last month to set a timeline for the removal.
The original bridge opened in 1952 to connect Port Isabel and South Padre Island. It’s been closed for decades and is considered too unsafe to be used for any other purpose.
The project will remove the remaining parts of the old causeway for use as an artificial reef near South Padre Island.
