The Rio Grande Valley, and the state, saw significant decreases in their unemployment rates last month.
The jobless rate in the Brownsville-Harlingen metro area declined 1.4%, down to 9.5%. It fell 2.2% percent in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area to 10.5%. Statewide, the Texas Workforce Commission’s October report puts the unemployment rate at 6.9% – a drop of 1.4%.
The numbers are a big reversal from September when unemployment rose significantly across the board, and the turnaround is reflected in the statistic showing more jobs in 10 of the 11 economic sectors measured by the state.
Employers in the Professional and Business Services sector led the way in additional hires followed by the Leisure and Hospitality industry.
