The San Antonio Food Bank is gearing up for an expected rise in demand as the federal government shutdown continues. President and CEO Eric Cooper says more than 89 thousand federal employees live in the San Antonio area, and they haven’t been paid since the beginning of the month.

Cooper says he expects about 50 thousand of them will seek help from the Food Bank if the shutdown continues into November. In addition, food stamp recipients have been told that their benefits may be delayed starting next month.
