Texas Senator John Cornyn has fired off a letter to the head of Homeland Security urging him to allow reconstruction work to resume on the flood control levees in Hidalgo County.
Hidalgo County officials last week pointed out several breaches in the levee system – stemming from the construction on the combo levee-border wall project started during the Trump administration. The work has been stopped by the Biden administration which has halted all border wall building.
In his letter, Cornyn asks Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to “take immediate action to implement an emergency mitigation plan” to ensure Hidalgo County is protected before the start of hurricane season. The letter follows a video call between Cornyn and Hidalgo County officials Friday.
