Pimentel says the cause of the current increase in migrants is no different from other spikes in recent years, although living conditions in their Central American countries have become even worse – the result of two Category 4 hurricanes late last year that wiped out entire villages as well as farmland. Immigrant advocates say this time, the migrants aren’t just seeking a better life – their trek to the border is a matter of survival.
