The son-in-law of a former Gulf Cartel leader has been sentenced to prison for his role in an extortion scheme. Thirty-nine-year-old Carlos Favian Martinez of Mission was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison yesterday.
Investigators say Martinez was part of a conspiracy that used violence to extort money from people transporting cars from the U.S. to Mexico. Martinez married the daughter of former Gulf Cartel boss Osiel Cardenas Guillen in 2004.
