A bill that would eliminate the STAAR test has the preliminary approval of the Texas House. State representatives gave House Bill 4 their near-unanimous approval on Monday, but it may have an uphill climb in the Senate.
The House and Senate versions of the bill would both swap the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test with a shorter exam to free up time for more classroom instruction. Otherwise, there are big differences between the two proposals, so lawmakers have a lot of negotiations to look forward to.
