The City of Starbase wants to annex about 71-hundred acres of land in the Boca Chica area. The city commission began the process on Wednesday. About 37-hundred acres belong to the federal government, including parts of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
A thousand acres is property owned by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, including part of Boca Chica State Park. City officials say annexing the land will clear up any questions about jurisdiction in the case of an emergency, such as a large fire. The city will notify all landowners of the proposed annexation and hold an initial public hearing next month.
