Starbase wants Cameron County to assign deputies to the recently formed city and is apparently willing to pay for it. Officials are reportedly negotiating an inter-local agreement that would put eight newly hired deputies on assignment in the city.
The agreement would direct the city to try to hire the deputies if Starbase forms its own police department. Funding for the new positions would come from Starbase, though control over their assignments would remain with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office. The agreement would reportedly be in place for five years.
