State Senate Approves Creation Of New Statewide Court Of Appeals

The Texas Senate is giving its approval to a bill to create a new statewide court of appeals that would hear cases of statewide importance.

Most cases that challenge the state’s laws or constitution, or involve lawsuits against the state or its agencies, are appealed at the Austin-based Third Court of Appeals. Voters in Democratic-leaning Travis County elect the court’s judges.

The new appellate court’s judges would be elected by the voters of the red state of Texas. Senate Bill 1529’s author is Republican Senator Joan Huffman of Houston.
