State Senator Sarah Eckhardt is in the running for Texas comptroller. The Austin Democrat announced her campaign on Sunday. Eckhardt had previously planned to run for the US Congress in a GOP-friendly district being vacated by Representative Michael McCaul.

No Democrat has been elected to the comptroller’s office in the 21st century. The office manages the state’s finances, including the new billion-dollar school voucher program, which Eckhardt describes as a Republican “scam.”
