When kids go back to class this year, there’s a good chance they’ll be taught by someone who is not certified by the state. Texas Tech Professor Jacob Kirksey says that will be changing thanks to historic investments in training and retention.

Legislation signed by the governor includes nearly 200-million dollars specifically devoted to teacher certification programs. The goal is to boost test scores. Studies have shown that kids taught by a certified teacher get better grades.
