The state of Texas is working to reopen a sugar mill in Cameron County. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced Friday that a sugar mill in Santa Rosa should reopen next year.
The mill was previously owned by Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers Incorporated and operated for 51 years. The reopened plant will operate as Santa Rosa Sugar LLC under a collaboration between three different groups.
The reopening will happen in four stages and will include land acquisition, upgrading equipment and facilities and then relaunching sugar production next year.
