What appears to be a second coronavirus wave sweeping through parts of Texas is causing there to be the most cases in the state since the highs that were seen this summer. State health officials estimate 84,500 active cases of COVID-19 – the most since September 1st. Officials also count almost 4,800 patients in hospitals across the state. And COVID-19 has now taken the lives of more than 17,200 people in Texas. Locally, almost 1,100 residents of Cameron County have died of the disease in a little more than 7 months. More than 1,900 residents of Hidalgo County have succumbed to the disease. That remains the second-highest death toll in the state. Valleywide, the 4-county region has lost more than 3,100 residents to COVID-19.
