A bill to replace the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test is on its way to the state Senate. The House on Tuesday voted 78-to-58 to replace the STAAR test with three smaller exams given throughout the year. Most Democrats opposed the plan.

The House bill is similar to one already passed by the Senate, which will now vote on the House version. Governor Greg Abbott said replacing the STAAR test was one of his top priorities for the special session.
