Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Majority Leader of the New York State Senate

The top Democrat in the New York State Senate is among those calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign amid a swirling sexual harassment scandal.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins issued a statement Sunday, saying the controversy surrounding accusations of inappropriate behavior by the governor is a distraction to the challenges facing the state. Stewart-Cousins declared: “Governor Cuomo must resign.”

The Democratic leader of the State Assembly, Carl Heastie, issued his own statement, saying it’s time for Cuomo “to seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of New York.” Earlier in the day, Cuomo said “there is no way” he will resign.
