Two Edinburg men are going to prison for their roles in a scheme to buy and transport guns to Mexico.
Federal investigators learned of the straw purchase scheme last July, when Rodolfo Benitez-Garza tried to buy three AK-47 rifles. Authorities then learned that Benitez-Garza was buying the guns for Mario Elier Leal, who was coordinating a series of firearms purchases in the area.
Leal was sentenced this week to more than eight years in prison, while Benitez-Garza will serve a year and a half.
