Two Eye Docs Fined $170M For Abusing Medicare

Federal officials are reporting a huge penalty for two Houston-area ophthalmologists who reportedly abused the Medicare system.

Dr. Emelike Agomo and Dr. Mustapha Kibiridge operated Outreach Diagnostic Clinic in Houston and Humble. A former employee sued, claiming both doctors were overcharging the Medicare billing system for glaucoma tests.

From 2006 to 2012, they reportedly submitted more than 14-thousand false claims overbilling the system by using the wrong code. At nearly 12-thousand-dollars per false claim, the doctors were ordered to pay more than 170-million-dollars in damages.
