TX Delegation Asks Congress To Withhold Mexican Funding Over RGV Water Woes

A bipartisan group of Texas lawmakers is asking Congress to withhold money from Mexico until that country lives up to its promises to send water to the United States. Mexico owes the U.S. more than 700-thousand acre-feet of water under a treaty signed in 1944.

Lawmakers have accused the country of dragging its feet on fulfilling the agreement, making the current dry conditions in the Rio Grande Valley even worse.

A Friday letter by both of Texas’ senators and eight members of the House encourages colleagues to withhold money earmarked for Mexico until the water obligation is fulfilled. The U.S. sent over 130-million dollars in assistance to Mexico during the last fiscal year.
