A Democratic lawmaker is refusing to leave the Texas capitol until the House reconvenes Wednesday morning. State Representative Nicole Collier of Fort Worth says she’ll stay locked in the House chamber until then. This comes after Democrats fled Texas for two weeks to protest Republican redistricting plans.
Lawmakers returned Monday, but Collier refused to sign off on a police escort required to leave the building. She later said she won’t sign away her dignity as an elected representative just so Republicans can control her movements and “monitor” her with police.
