Texas lawmakers are considering legislation that would exempt police officers from being charged with deadly conduct for actions taken in the line of duty.

House Bill 2436 is up for a vote in the lower chamber today. The Senate approved a similar bill earlier this month. The bill aims to protect law enforcement officers from prosecution under a charge that was created to help prosecutors combat gang violence statewide. Opponents say the bill would authorize police to use excessive force while on duty.
