The University Interscholastic League may no longer allow foreign exchange students to participate in varsity sports in Texas, as of next school year.

The UIL’s legislative council recently approved the rule change, which wouldn’t affect foreign exchange students participating in sub-varsity sports or activities such as music and academics.

Several council members pointed out that Texas kids can’t even compete on sports teams in a neighboring town, but foreign exchange students can fly in from another country and compete. The rule change still needs the approval of state Education Commissioner Mike Morath.
