Unemployment In The Valley Drops In December

The Rio Grande Valley is seeing another big swing in the unemployment rate for December. With a big drop in unemployment in October followed by a dramatic rise in November, the jobless rate fell again last month.

Unemployment fell in the Brownsville-Harlingen metro area .9 percent to 10.3 percent. It declined .8 percent in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area to 11.7 percent. Statewide, unemployment dropped almost a full point to 7.2 percent.

The Texas Workforce Commission’s December report also shows 9 of the 11 industries the commission measures added jobs. The Professional and Business Services sector led the way in the number of additional hires while the Information sector had the highest percentage gain in new jobs.
