Unemployment Up In The Valley, Down Statewide In June

A 3-month streak of job growth in the Valley ended last month. Unemployment in Cameron and Hidalgo counties went back up in June – increasing 1.1% in the Brownsville-Harlingen area to 9.8%, and rising 1% in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area to 10.8%.

Statewide, June unemployment was down .1% to 6.5%. There’ve been job gains now for 13 of the last 14 months, and in 10 of the 11 industries measured by the Texas Workforce Commission.

Most of the new hiring last month came in the Leisure and Hospitality sector. The construction industry was the only sector to see layoffs – losing more than 3,000 jobs for a second straight month.
