By The U.S. will begin a “phased opening” of the country’s southern cattle ports. The decision by the Department of Agriculture on Friday will allow a limited amount of cattle to be imported from Mexico after the ports were closed in May to control the spread of a New World Screwworm outbreak.
The USDA will reopen the livestock port in Douglas, Arizona on August 24th. Other ports will reopen later, depending on Mexico’s compliance with the Joint Action Plan.
The USDA has tracked 42 confirmed cases of the flesh-eating parasite — mostly in Texas — since the start of the outbreak on June 3rd.
