Unemployment In The Valley
While unemployment was going down across Texas as a whole last month, it was going up in the Rio Grande Valley. The January unemployment rate rose 3-tenths of a percent in the Brownsville-Harlingen metro area to 9-point-7 percent. It ticked up a-tenth of a percent in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission to 10-and-a-half percent. Statewide, the jobless rate fell 3-tenths of a percent to 5-point-seven percent. Of the 11 major industries in Texas -- the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector added the most jobs in January.
