An elderly woman is being evaluated after closing the North Freeway for nearly five hours on Thursday in an armed standoff.
Harris County deputies responded around 1:30 p.m. to the situation on I-45 near Cypresswood Drive. Investigators say a 64-year-old woman with a history of mental problems rear-ended a big rig. She then got out of her car with a handgun and sat in a folding chair in one of the southbound lanes.
Deputies closed the freeway in both directions. The woman surrendered without violence at around 6:30 p.m.
